Derailleur Hanger Bent (Shifting Suddenly Got Worse)

If your bike was shifting fine and then suddenly isn’t—especially after a tip-over, crash, or transport—the problem is often a bent derailleur hanger.

A bent hanger is one of the most common causes of poor shifting, and it doesn’t take much force to bend one.

What Is a Derailleur Hanger?

The derailleur hanger is a small, replaceable piece of metal that connects your rear derailleur to the frame. It’s designed to bend instead of damaging the frame or derailleur.

Common Signs of a Bent Hanger

  • Bike won’t shift cleanly across all gears
  • Shifting is fine in some gears but not others
  • Chain skips or hesitates unexpectedly
  • Derailleur looks slightly angled when viewed from behind

What Causes It

  • Bike falling over on the drivetrain side
  • Transport damage (car racks, storage)
  • Minor crashes or trail impacts
  • Even small knocks during handling

Why It Matters

Modern drivetrains require precise alignment. Even a slightly bent hanger throws off the derailleur’s position, making proper shifting nearly impossible.

Adjusting cable tension will NOT fix a bent hanger. It may temporarily mask the issue but won’t solve it.

Can You Fix It Yourself?

Proper hanger alignment requires a specific alignment tool to measure and correct positioning. Trying to bend it by hand usually makes things worse or inconsistent.

What a Proper Fix Looks Like

  • Check hanger alignment with a professional tool
  • Realign hanger to factory spec
  • Inspect derailleur and drivetrain for damage
  • Re-index shifting after alignment
